Our Story
Church History
Promise Tabernacle Church was originally established in 1925 as Golden Leaf Missionary Baptist Church at 916 East Jamieson Street under the faithful leadership of Reverend W.A. Vaughn. What began with 30 dedicated members grew steadily over the decades as God blessed the ministry with faithful pastors who shepherded the congregation through seasons of growth and transformation, including Reverend Earl Thigpen (1958-1981) and Reverend Archie Hawkins (1981-1984).
In December 1984, a pivotal moment arrived when Reverend Frederick L. Flowers was called to the pastorate. A man of faith and vision, Pastor Flowers believed that with God, all things are possible. Acting upon this profound conviction, he encouraged the congregation to build a new sanctuary. The congregation moved to 815 West Carpenter Road in July 1987, and the building was dedicated on May 21, 1989, with distinguished church leaders in attendance including Pastor William Duncan of Canaan Baptist Church, Pastor James O. Flowers of North Star Baptist Church, and Reverend Dr. A.J. Pointer of Metropolitan Baptist Church, Moderator of the Great Lakes District, who presided over the dedication ceremony.
Under Bishop Flowers' anointed leadership over the past 40 years, Promise Tabernacle has experienced tremendous growth both spiritually and numerically. His emphasis on the teaching ministry of the church, combined with three weekly Bible study classes, a dynamic Sunday School, and a variety of Bible-centered and life-empowering seminars, has contributed greatly to this growth. The church's unwavering emphasis on the Gospel as the power of God has resulted in a congregation deeply rooted in Scripture and committed to reaching the world for Jesus.
Today, Promise Tabernacle continues to fulfill its mission of Reaching the World for Jesus®, serving as a beacon of hope and transformation in our community through teaching, worship, and fellowship that transforms lives through the power of the Gospel.
